Updated: "Bone" & "Superman" Join Inaugural Gotham & Festival Genius Audience Noms

Debra Granik’s indie sensation “Winter’s Bone,” which led the nominations for the 20th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, picked up an additional nomination this evening in Midtown Manhattan, joining a group of five films to pick up nods for the Gotham’s first ever Festival Genius Audience Award. Actor Oliver Platt unveiled the five nominees at an event at the Dunhill store on Madison Avenue in New York.

Rounding out the competition – made up of audience award winners from the top 50 North American film festivals – are a batch of fest favorites: Davis Guggenheim’s “Waiting for ‘Superman'” (Sundance Audience Award), John Gray’s “White Irish Drinkers” (Woodstock Film Festival Audience Award for Narrative Feature) Will Canon’s “Brotherhood” (SXSW Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature) and Doug Dearth’s documentary “9000 Needles” (Phoenix Film Festival Cox Audience Award).

All five nominees were selected by voters from a pool of 26 eligible films, with over 12,000 votes cast on the Gotham Awards website.

“We are thrilled to share IFP’s first Festival Genius Audience Award in partnership with Slated at our 20th Anniversary Gotham Awards,” said Joana Vicente, Executive Director of the IFP in a press release. “The purpose of the award is to promote films on the festival circuit through audience participation. This year we launch a true audience award, where the independent film community gets a chance vote for their favorite films.”

Voting to select a final winner is open to the public from November 10 – 29. To cast a ballot, visit the Award’s site.
