Zeitgeist Films Latches Onto a “Revolution”

Zeitgeist Films Latches Onto a "Revolution"

Following its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September, Lynn Hershman Leeson’s “!Women Art Revolution” has been acquired by Zeitgeist Films for North American distribution. The film will makes its U.S. premiere next year at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival, and will open at New York’s IFC Center in June, 2011, with a national release to follow.

Filmed over four decades, Leeson’s documentary chronicles the struggles and breakthroughs of female artists from Judy Chicago to Miranda July. As TIFF doc programmer Thom Powers stated when “!Women Art Revolution” premiered at the festival, “Today’s art world has embraced visionaries such as Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, Miranda July, Marina Abramovic and Shirin Neshat. But only a generation ago, it was extremely rare to find female artists in major museums and galleries. Enacting that change was nothing short of a revolution. Director Lynn Hershman was an active participant in this feminist art movement and spent the past forty years chronicling its breakthroughs on video. Now she’s shaped that archive into a remarkable cultural history that stirs up vital questions about politics, equality and freedom of expression.”

Zeitgeist’s Co-President Nancy Gerstman added in press release, “There is so much about the history of the Feminist Art Movement that has been unacknowledged up to now, and Lynn Hershman Leeson has done a great service in enriching our understanding of the pioneering heroines from the 70s until today. We feel privileged to be part of this ongoing history of the most significant art movement of the late 20th century.”

The deal was negotiated by Gerstman and Zeitgeist Co-President Emily Russo with George M. Rush, who is responsible for “!Women Art Revolution” world sales.
