Actor Watch: Blue Valentine's Gosling, THR Actors Roundtable, Duvall vs. DiCaprio On Multiple Takes

Blue Valentine‘s director-actor team Derek Cianfrance and Ryan Gosling are getting back together for The Place Beyond the Pines, a Jack London-inspired film shooting next summer. Cianfrance is also developing a show for HBO, and while details are murky, character development is key. After Blue Valentine, he’s asking his actors to dig deep: “We’re gonna try to give new meaning to the word ‘character development.'”

Between projects, Cianfrance and Gosling (here is our Sundance interview with the pair) have kept in touch regarding all the fans of Gosling’s ukelele playing of “You Always Hurt The Ones You Love.” This musical moment is one that THR singles out at their Actor’s Roundtable as one of the greatest in movie history. Here is TOH’s endorsement of Gosling’s musical talent.

Robert Duvall (Get Low) during the Roundtable (a mix of lead and supporting actors including Mark Ruffalo, Colin Firth, James Franco and Jesse Eisenberg), throws auteur Stanley Kubrick under the bus, calling him an “actor’s enemy” with his exhaustive amount of takes. Kris Tapley picks up on this idea and relates it to his conversation with Leonardo DiCaprio, who provides an alternate point of view: the upside of numerous takes with the likes of Martin Scorsese. (The Social Network‘s David Fincher is also a multiple takes man). Here is Tapley’s DiCaprio interview.
