“Grit” to Open 61st Berlin International Film Festival

"Grit" to Open 61st Berlin International Film Festival

Oscar winners Joel and Ethan Coen’s “True Grit” will open the Berlin International Film Festival, the event said Wednesday. The film will screen out of competition as an international premiere at the 61st annual event on February 10th.

“True Grit” features Academy Award winners Jeff Bridges (“Crazy Heart”) and Matt Damon (“The Bourne Ultimatum”), Josh Brolin (“Wall Street”) as well as the young American newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. A re-interpretation of the Western classic “True Grit” starring John Wayne (1969), the feature is the story of 14-year-old Mattie (Steinfeld) who sets out to find the man who murdered her father. Since the authorities won’t help her, she hires the tough marshal “Rooster” Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) who, together with her and Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon), picks up the trail of the killer (Brolin).

“Joel and Ethan Coen stand for first-rate American independent cinema. With their penchant for irony, and off-the-wall characters and stories they have repeatedly captivated audiences,” commented Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick in a statement. “’True Grit’ is a wonderful way to kick off the Berlinale 2011.”

The 2011 Berlinale will take place February 10 – 20. “True Grit,” a Paramount Pictures film, will open December 22nd in the United States and will be released in Germany February 24th.
