This week’s announcement of the Sundance 2011 lineup, includes a documentary called Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure in the World Cinema Documentary Competition. The official synopsis: When two friends tape-recorded the fights of their violently noisy neighbors, they accidentally created one of the world’s first “viral” pop-culture sensations. So, sounds like a companion film of sorts to Ben Steinbauer’s Winnebago Man. Like the “Winnebago Man,” the two neighbors of Shut Up Little Man have inspired many homage videos, and even inspired a 2002 dramatized feature film, called Shut Yer Dirty Little Mouth. In 2001, at SXSW, we programmed a series of shorts by filmmaker/puppeteer Mike Mitchell that were inspired by the original audio tapes. Here’s one of those:
Mitchell has gone on to direct several studio films, most recently Shrek Forever After. Coincidentally, Mitchell was also featured in Winnebago Man.
