The Weekly Crop: "Blue Valentine"'s Victory, "Social Network" Continues to Climb, and Slamdance!

It’s that time of the year again. The past week at indieWIRE has been dominated by awards chatter.

Monday saw David Fincher’s critically lauded “The Social Network” topping the DC Critics Awards, following its sweep at the National Board of Review Awards. That news was followed up by the nominations for the Annie Awards, of which DreamWork’s “How To Train Your Dragon” lead the way. Back in live feature land, “The King’s Speech” star Geoffrey Rush was named as next year’s recipient for the Montecito Award at the 26th edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Another awards heavy hitter, Joel and Ethan Coen’s “True Grit,” was announced as the opening night film for the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival which kicks off on February 10. And in great news for Derek Cianfrance’s festival darling and Spirit nominated “Blue Valentine,” the original NC-17 rating the MPAA slapped onto the film has been overturned. Sometimes things just do work out.

Cianfrance’s film has been gaining considerable buzz since premiering earlier this year at Sundance, so in fitting form indieWIRE included him in this month’s Honor Roll which profiles filmmakers and actors who’ve had a good run in 2010. Other honorees that hit the web this week include future Spidey himself, Andrew Garfield, French screen siren Isabelle Huppert, and “I Am Love”‘s Tilda Swinton.

Finally fall doesn’t only bring awards chatter, it also marks the first wave of 2011 major festival announcements. Fresh of the heels of Sundance unveiling their feature film lineup, the festival announced their short film lineup. The 17th annual Slamdance Film Festival also fired up this week, by listing their ten narrative and eight documentary films to be featured in next year’s event.
