This video popped up on the Internets late last week, but it’s even more worthy of a look now that “Black Swan” has picked up a record 12 Critics’ Choice nominations, among other year-end accolades it’s received over the weekend. “Showgirls,” in comparison, was nominated for a (still?) record 13 Golden Raspberry nominations fifteen years ago. At least one writer is seemingly outraged by the mash-up of the two films, calling it “crude and simplistic, apples and oranges.” I still haven’t seen either film yet, so I can’t agree or disagree, but I do wonder if that statement means to imply “Black Swan” is either “crude” or “simplistic,” with “Showgirls” fitting the other adjective (as in a parallel to “apples and oranges”). Box Office Mojo aligns the films, as well, along with “Burlesque,” in the comparative chart for “similar movies” to “Showgirls. Fortunately for you “Black Swan” fans out there, it seems likely to come out the box office champ of this trio, provided it continues to do such incredible business as its screen count increases.
I share this video — which is as NSFW as “Showgirls” ever is — as someone who now because of it feels slightly less excited about “Black Swan” and more obliged to finally see “Showgirls.” Feel free to argue for one’s necessary viewing of one or the other or both after the clip.
(note: to anyone thinking I’m really going to avoid one of the most acclaimed films of 2010, I assure you that I will indeed catch up with “Black Swan” as soon as I have the opportunity)
