John Cooper: Calm Before the Storm

Earlier this week, Sundance festival head John Cooper predicted that this year might see the largest attendance in the history of the event. He warned that as many as 60,000 people would descend upon this years’ Sundance Film Festival. And yesterday, as the event got underway in Park City, UT, crowded streets and shuttles certainly underscored that this is a jammed first weekend.

Inside the lobby of the Eccles at noon yesterday, though, John Cooper (pictured) was among just a few people hanging out ahead of the very first screening of Sean Durkin’s “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” the latest feature from the Borderline Films (“Afterschool,” “Two Gates of Sleep”). Lead by a breakthrough lead performance by Olsen Twins’ sister Elizabeth, the American indie explores the aftermath of a young woman’s escape from a haunting cult.

Cooper praised the movie at an Eccles Theater intro last night, but here he is before the screening, sporting a scarf handmade by his daughters.
