Roadside Attractions has acquired Miranda July’s “The Future” out of the Sundance Film Festival, continuing one of the fest’s potent sales years in recent memory. July’s follow-up to “Me and You and Everyone We Know,” the film has been met with a mostly positive response at the festival, which is heading into its final weekend.
“As they did with ‘Me and You and Everyone We Know,’ July’s idiosyncratic sensibilities are destined to divide people, although mostly strong critical reactions and a hip appeal among artsy crowds may elevate its profile,” Eric Kohn wrote in the film’s review. “The movie’s best hope lies with a smallish distributor that can tap into that niche audience and drive their support to a healthy life on VOD.”

ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS HEADS TO THE FUTURE
Miranda July’s THE FUTURE is the follow-up to her critical and commercial smash, ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW
Park City, UT (January 28, 2011) – In their third pick-up of Sundance 2011, Roadside Attractions has acquired all North American rights to Miranda July’s inventive and soulful second feature THE FUTURE. A substantial theatrical release is planned for later this year, with Lionsgate handling all ancillaries thereafter.
In the eagerly anticipated follow-up to her Camera d’Or winning debut, internationally acclaimed artist and author Miranda July writes, directs and stars alongside Hamish Linklater in the story of a thirty-something couple who, on deciding to adopt a stray cat, change their perspective on life, literally altering the course of time and testing their faith in each other and themselves.
“We all immediately fell in love with Miranda’s genre-bending cosmic romance, and we think theatrical audiences around the country are going to feel the same way,” said Roadside Co-President Eric d’Arbeloff. “She’s brilliantly pulling off things within the realm of narrative cinema that no one else is even attempting.”
The deal was negotiated Roadside Co-President Howard Cohen and VP, Acquisitions and Business Affairs Dustin Smith, and UTA on behalf of the filmmakers.
THE FUTURE is presented by Azor Film, GNK Productions and Film4, in association with The Match Factory and Haut et Court with the support of Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Filmförderungsanstalt. The film was produced Gina Kwon, Gerhard Meixner and Roman Paul.
