The Company Men: Best on Screen This Weekend

The Company Men: Best on Screen This Weekend

A year after it played at Sundance, The Company Men opens wider today, with Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper as executives whose lives spiral down when they’re laid off. And despite any rumblings of an economic recovery, John Wells’ tough, poignant film is as wrenching and realistic as ever.

More than most documentaries, this film captures the raw emotional impact of the economic downturn. Affleck is the emotional center as a family man stunned by the layoff and even more by the difficulty of landing a new job, but all the characters are hit in different ways, and all of them are affecting. The subtle cast includes Rosemarie DeWitt as Affleck’s wife and Kevin Costner in an unexpected role as his working-class brother-in-law.

I reviewed the film for Newsweek when it opened in limited release over the holidays. Here’s a link to that review.

Like so many Sundance movies, this timely film deserves to be discovered by an ever-widening audience. .
