Burton’s Dark Shadows Gets Green, Winterbottom’s Hardy Trishna Reinterpretation

Burton's Dark Shadows Gets Green, Winterbottom's Hardy Trishna Reinterpretation

Tim Burton’s reworking of 60s gothic soap opera Dark Shadows centers on vampire Barnabas Collins (to be played by Johnny Depp) and his escapades with witches, monsters, ghosts and the like. Eva Green will play the powerful witch Angelique, with whom Collins enjoys a love/hate relationship. Since her breakout role in Casino Royale, the French actress has gone somewhat unnoticed (she had a supporting role in 2007’s The Golden Compass). Now, she has Perfect Sense (see trailer below), boarding school drama Cracks (March 18), a Maria Callas TV biopic and more to come. Vampire expert Seth Grahame-Smith adapted Dark Shadows; he also wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (fitting, since he wrote the novel).

– Another reinterpretation is on its way from Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart, The Killer Inside Me). He is returning to Thomas Hardy after his 1996 Jude [The Obscure] (which starred Kate Winslet) with Tess of the d’Urbervilles, which was memorably turned into the 1979 film Tess by Roman Polanski; Gemma Arterton and Eddie Redmayne starred in the BBC’s 2008 TV mini series adaptation. Winterbottom’s modern retelling of the devastating love story – Trishna – will take place in India, where Jay (the son of a British property developer) and Trishna (daughter of an auto rickshaw driver) meet and begin their tragic entanglement. Hardy’s 1891 novel investigated Victorian hypocrisy through the lower class’s candid stance on sex and religion, the loss of innocence (a snippet is below). Riz Ahmed and Frieda Pinto will star. ThePlaylist has more on what’s next for Winterbottom: “Someone help Winterbottom out, please.

“How can I pray for you, when I am forbidden to believe that the great Power who moves the world would alter his plans on my account?” –
Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Chapter 46
