Oscar Watch: Tom Hanks Works for the Academy

Thompson on Hollywood

Academy governor Tom Hanks has been working overtime. At Monday’s Academy Nominees lunch he turned up in a well-produced how-to video shot at the empty Hollywood and Highland Kodak Theatre that will be the site of the Oscar Show February 27. His goal: teaching this year’s crop of 190 nominees how to give an entertaining acceptance speech: no lists, keep it to 45 seconds, save it for the Thank You Cam, etc. (A more detailed DVD will be sent to all the nominees.)

Doing presenting duty at the Oscars when you aren’t a nominee or returning after a win is a chore for many movie stars. But Hanks is willing to do the honors. The two-time Oscar-winner, who voiced Woody in this year’s best-picture nominee Toy Story 3, is going to turn up as a presenter Oscar night, joining hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway and announced presenters Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Marisa Tomei and Oprah Winfrey, among others.
