Poster Watch: One Day's Hathaway and Sturgess in the Clinch

Clearly director Lone Scherfig’s follow-up to An Education is worth anticipating, so I am eager to check out her upcoming Brit romance One Day. Focus Features has released a nostalgic new poster that conjures up references to vintage photos of Bob Dylan and that iconic VJ Day photograph (see below). Anything else? UPDATE: I’ve added the famous Robert Doisneau kiss photo and Weegee’s “Lovers at the Palace Theatre,” c. 1940.

Anne Hathaway stirred some local resistance to the idea of her playing a working class Northern Brit–but even diehard Bridget Jones Diary fans came around to American Renee Zellweger playing their zaftig heroine. Hathaway co-stars with Jim Sturgess (here’s my The Way Back flip cam interview) in this Focus Features release (July 8) adapted by David Nicholls from his bestseller about a London couple who meet as students in the 80s and stay in touch for 20 years. Scherfig told The Guardian:

“It’s definitely a warmer interpretation of Emma because Emma is more provincial and shy and sometimes overcompensating. Anne is a very warm actress. She has the warmth of Elizabeth Taylor or Judy Garland … I love Emma as she is in the book, obviously, but I also love Anne Hathaway’s version of her.”
