If you’re a celebrity trying to convince the world that you’re not a whack-job, out of control on drugs (and that’s even before getting around to the anti-Semitic attacks on your boss), it’s not a good idea to start by giving a lengthy interview to ABC, which heavily promoted its exclusive, then undermine the network by giving an interview to NBC too. But Charlie Sheen has much bigger personal and pr problems than that.
ABC will go ahead witih its hour-long prime-time visit to Sheen’s house (Tuesday, 10 ET) and showed bits on Good Morning America today. This segment includes the already notorious moment when he says, “I am on a drug, it’s called – Charlie Sheen!” Print can’t convey the way he spits out his own name without any clue that he already sounds like a Saturday Night Live parody.
The gaunt, unhealthy look, the cigarette – when’s the last time you saw a star smoke during an interview? – do not make him seem OK.
Meanwhile, NBC’s Today show began running its interview in two segments this morning, with more planned for tomorrow. Taped after ABC’s interviews, he seems even less in control.
Here is says he never showed up for work drunk, just “a little bit sideways.” That’s not likely to help if he goes ahead with his threat to sue CBS for shutting down Two and a Half Men.
In this longer clip he says he will win against CBS with “zeal and focus and violent hatred,” and that he’s a special person who has “tiger blood.”
Someone that out of touch with reality is not likely to come to his senses and stop talking, so it seems this media spectacle has just begun.
