Woody Allen To Open Cannes 2011 with Midnight in Paris, A "Love Letter" to the City

Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris will open the 2011 Cannes Film Festival on May 11. Here, the film will have its world premiere out of competition, as did You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and Match Point (2005).

Allen’s first directorial outing in France, Midnight in Paris is also his first film to open Cannes. Starring Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Marion Cotillard, as well as Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Gad Elmaleh and Léa Seydoux, the romantic comedy is “a wonderful love letter to Paris,” says fest director Thierry Frémaux:

“It’s a film in which Woody Allen takes a deeper look at the issues raised in his last films: our relationship with history, art, pleasure and life. His 41st feature reveals once again his inspiration.”

French audiences will be able to see the film in 400 theaters on the same day, distributed through Mars Films. Sony has North American rights; we recently took a look at the fate of their past partnerships.
