A few weeks back, I introduced Picton Picturefest on this blog, an event me and some fellow Canadians are in the process of planning for this summer. Essentially, Picton Picturefest is a little film festival and “cinephile camp” for youth near my hometown in Southern Ontario (clearly inspired by this little experience)… Somehow, it manifested from that idea to a full-fledged operation, with 20 us – filmmakers, film producers, film festival employees, media artists – now part of the “Picturefest Collective,” a non-profit organization with government funding and some serious ambition to make Picton Picturefest a reality.
The dream is to provide a unique showcase for artists’ work, an education “summer camp” – at a gorgeous little arts colony – for a group of eager budding filmmakers (where workshops will allow them to make a short film in 4 days, to screen on closing night) and cinephiles of all walks of life, and an experience that will alter the way all participants engage with cinema. And we can’t do it alone. Our objective is to truly facilitate the idea of the film festival as community. No one is going to making money off of Picturefest – it is a true DIO (do it ourselves) production. This idea extends from the organizing and execution of the festival itself, to its actual film and educational programming. We’ve already partnered with other film festivals, colleges, film production companies, but the more is severely the merrier in our case. So sift through the info on our shiny new website and consider how you can make Picton Picturefest part of your summer (or join us on Facebook ).
One way you can do so in the very immediate future is by attending or donating to our first fundraisier, going down in Toronto next Wednesday. The info is here and here:
