Darren Aronofsky NOT Producing Drug World Drama 'Intricate' For Brad Furman To Direct

Update: Oops! Looks like the LA Times made an error. Reps for Darren Aronofsky tell us neither he nor Protozoa Pictures have anything to do with this project. As you were.

Requiem For A Dream” not only put Darren Aronofsky on the map in a huge way, it was also one of the most harrowing drug dramas of all time, exploring the high and very ugly cost of addiction. And it looks like the helmer is ready to dip his toes back into that world, at least behind the scenes, as he’s putting his skills behind a new drug world drama with another director set to take the reins.

24 Frames reports that Brad Furman (“The Lincoln Lawyer“) will direct “Intricate,” a film being produced by Aronofksy and Scott Franklin under the Protozoa Pictures banner. Based on a true story, the film will tell the story of “a highly touted college basketball recruit who gets involved in the drug underworld after his hoops career doesn’t pan out. At the time, the New York narcotics trade is rife with violence and connections to the burgeoning rap industry.”

It pretty much sounds like an offshoot to the world Aronofsky explored so well in “Requiem For A Dream,” and with his team at Protozoa developing the project, we have no doubts it’ll turn into an interesting piece of material. Whether Furman is up to the challenge or not remains the question. His first feature, “The Take,” was a forgettable crime drama, though advance word on “The Lincoln Lawyer” appears to be better than expected. But he’ll have good support around him so we’ll see how this one develops. No screenwriter has been named just yet, so it seems this is still in early stages.
