Guadalajara Film Festival (FICG) and European Film Promotion (EFP) are working together in several interconnected ways. This one focuses on strengthening the presence of European films in Latin America. EFP’s Film Sales Support (FSS) helps support promotional campaigns of 10 European films originating from Bulgaria, France, Germany, Spain, Poland and Greece which are showing at the 26th Guadalajara International Film Festival, now taking place (25 March to 1 April).
Guadalajara is Mexico’s most ambitious festival in relation to tying-in with Europe. The festival screens around 60 European films in various sections. Reaching beyond boundaries, Guadalajara also brings together various professionals from Europe and Latin America, such as the Cannes Marché’s Producers Network and the Ibero-American Films Crossing Borders as well as hosting the Guadalajara Talent Campus in collaboration with the Berlinale Talent Campus.
The FSS incentive for sales and production companies is an integral part of EFP’s activities promoting European films and talent around the world. EFP consists of a unique membership of 31 European promotion organizations from 32 countries and is supported by the MEDIA Programme of the European Union. Funding for the 10 films screening in Guadalajara, amongst which are 80 Days (ISA: Latido), directed by Jon Garaño & Jose Mari Goenaga, Wasted Youth (no sales agent), directed by Argyris Papadimitropoulos & Jan Vogel, and Shelter directed by Dragomir Sholev, has been confirmed by EFP’s member organizations, the Bulgarian National Film Center, German Films, the Greek Film Centre, ICAA (Spain), the Polish Film Institute and Unifrance.

Eight different sales agents and production companies are at the receiving end of financial help covering 50% of costs for prints, promotional material, press work and expenses related to the professionals’ presence at the festival. Additional costs for visits to buyers in Mexico City directly after the festival to increase sales opportunities may also be reimbursed. The amount in total earmarked for the sales agents and producers totals €30,390.
In addition to the financial incentives of FSS, EFP is operating an umbrella stand at the expanding Mercado for the second time. The market, meanwhile in its 9th year, runs alongside the festival from 25th to 31th March and has moved to the Expo Guadalajara in the vicinity of the new festival centre. The stand will highlight the presence of European films at the Guadalajara festival and offers the supported companies a base for meetings with local buyers. After the first weekend, EFP will be bringing together European and Latin American professionals and talent at a cocktail reception.
