Hailee Steinfeld Eyes Role As Sleeping Beauty In Yet Another Revisionist Fable

The big question surrounding Hailee Steinfeld right now is: what next? The actress broke out in a huge way with “True Grit,” snagging an Oscar nomination, but more importantly kicking open doors of opportunity in Hollywood. She was briefly mentioned as a possible contender for a role in “The Hunger Games” and got attached to the tween “Memento“-like film “Forgotten.” But it looks like the team around the actress want to parlay her success into tentpole fare.

Deadline reports that Hailee Steinfeld is attached a spec script that’s going out to buyers in the hope they’ll bite. Written by Lindsay Devlin, the story would find Steinfeld playing Sleeping Beauty in an update that would be told from her perspective as she explores her dreamworld while trying to find a way out.

Sigh. Can we put a moratorium on fairy tale movies for a moment? Peter Pan, Jack And The Beanstalk, Snow White (times three), The Wizard Of Oz, Hansel & Gretel….the list of fairy tales being turned into edge movies is pretty endless and frankly already a little tiring. And we’d hazard a guess this isn’t the only Sleeping Beauty spec knocking around town.

We understand why agents and managers want to capitalize on Oscar success with a big, moneymaking project. Hell, Jennifer Lawrence bailed on the much more interesting “Savages” with Oliver Stone to go do “The Hunger Games” (and she’s already got another franchise in “X-Men: First Class“). As a career move, yeah, it’s probably a better choice but it’s those smaller pictures that define your breadth and scope as an actress. We’d hate to see Steinfeld get lost in the currency of blockbuster filmmaking, but that’s the name of the game these days so we’re aren’t surprised either. But we’re pretty sure Mattie Ross wouldn’t approve.
