Kino Lorber has bought all US rights to the documentary “El Bulli: Cooking in Progress,” directed by Gereon Wetzel. The film will be released July 27 in New York, before expanding to other markets, as the first title under Kino Lorber’s new Alive Mind theatrical label.
“El Bulli” is an inside look into the world of Ferran Adria, widely considered to be the world’s best chef and the inventor of “molecular gastronomy.” His restaurant El Bulli, located about three hours outside Barcelona, has been a Mecca for the food obsessed, but he will close El Bulli July 30 in order to reopen in 2014 as a think-tank for molecular gastronomy and other creative expressions of cooking.
“El Bulli” premiered at the SXSW Film Festival on Saturday, March 12 as part of its SXSGlobal Section.
Kino Lorber bills its Alive Mind Cinema label as specializing in “topics related to Personal Transformation, Progressive Spirituality and Cultural Change.” Alive Mind plans to release more than 20 titles annually across all platforms, with six to eight also receiving a theatrical release.
The deal was negotiated by Kino Lorber’s VP Elizabeth Sheldon with Autlook Films’ CEO Peter Jager and Astrid Guger, head of theatrical sales.
