Meet the 2011 ND/NF Filmmakers: "Hit So Hard" & "Pariah"

Following Wednesday night’s kickoff to the 40th edition of the Museum of Modern Art and the Film Society of the Lincoln Center’s New Directors/New Films festival, indieWIRE unleashes two additions to our annual ‘Meet the ND/NF Filmmakers’ series.

Today P. David Ebersole dishes on the making of his rock documentary “Hit So Hard” and Dee Rees opens up about what inspired her to write and direct her coming-of-age drama “Pariah.”

The 2011 ND/NF runs March 23 – April 3. Click here for the full ND/NF lineup.

A snapshot of Friday’s two filmmaker interviews:

P. David Ebersole no hold barred portrait of Patty Schemel, drummer for Hole during the band’s peak years, takes a look behind the making and breaking of the band and features interviews with members, including Courtney Love herself. “I am going to bust myself and say that I am a fan and a believer,” SchemeI said of Love. “I think Courtney is awesome. She has a line in our film about how she has no rivals — people wake up everyday and want to be Madonna, but no one wants her job. True, that. She is an original and a force of nature and you expect every bump in the road that comes with that pure fact.”

Dee Rees’ feature filmmaking debut, “Pariah,” hit big at Sundance where it was picked up by Focus Features for distribution later this year. The coming-of-age drama follows Alike, a 17-year-old teen struggling to come out to her parents. “I was going through my own coming-out process when I first wrote “Pariah” in the summer of 2005, and that was the biggest inspiration for the story,” Rees told indieWIRE. “The film is semi-autobiographical in that as I was coming into my sexuality. I started to be okay with knowing who I was but the question remained how to express that, and the main character, Alike, struggles in the same way.”
