Meet the 2011 ND/NF Filmmakers: "Tyrannosaur" & "Black Power Mix Tape"

Following last night’s kickoff to the 40th edition of the Museum of Modern Art and the Film Society of the Lincoln Center’s New Directors/New Films festival, indieWIRE unleashes two additions to our annual ‘Meet the ND/NF Filmmakers’ series.

Today: “Tyrannosaur” director Paddy Considine and “The Black Power Mixtape”‘s Goran Hugo Olsson.

The 2011 ND/NF runs March 23 – April 3. Click here for the full ND/NF lineup.

A snapshot of Thursday’s two filmmaker interviews:

Actor Paddy Considine (“In America”) steps behind the lens for the first time with “Tyrannosaur,” a dark love starry starring Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman as two strangers brought together under dire circumstances. “There were numerous happy accidents that happened during the shoot,” Considine told indieWIRE. “A lot of inspiration came from embracing the community of Seacroft Estate where we shot. The busker in the wake scene we picked up off the street. He was harassing the crew and I pulled him in and got him to improvise a song on the spot. He just piled into it, so I got him in the movie.”

In “The Black Power Mixtape,” filmmaker Goran Hugo Olsson sheds a light on the Black Power movement by piecing together never before seen interviews with uncovered footage shot by a group of Swedish journalists who covered the period. “The film is what I call a “mixtape” – not a “remix,” Olsson stressed to indieWIRE. “This “mixtape” is riffing on the 70s style of sharing music like we used to do on cassettes back in the day. But here in this instance, I am sharing film, and sharing this new found archival footage with a whole new world. I wanted to keep the exact feeling of that time period and of the material intact and not cut it into pieces. I wanted to respect not only the people in the images, but also the filmmakers who interviewed and filmed them.”
