Nintendo 3DS Will Stream Netflix

Nintendo 3DS Will Stream Netflix

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of attending a launch event in Tribeca for the new Nintendo 3DS, which will be released in the U.S. at the end of March. The handheld gaming device offers optional three-dimensional graphics that do not require the use of special glasses. The Nintendo 3DS is fine fun, but the 3D aspect wasn’t what sold me; it was nice to have easy access to so many classic Nintendo games. And, for older gaming fans like myself, another aspect of the new device should prove to be more interesting than the optional 3D. That would be the addition of Netflix streaming, a development that seems kind of buried in a recent address by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. From the New York Times: “Meanwhile, Nintendo is moving beyond gaming with the 3DS, much as it has done with the Wii. Nintendo announced Wednesday that the 3DS would be able to stream content from Netflix. Users will also be able to pause a movie on the 3DS and restart it at the same point on a Wii, or vice versa. Nintendo is also working with movie studios to show 3-D versions of trailers on the devices. ‘Green Lantern,’ which will premier in June, will be the first such trailer available.
