Sony Pictures Classics Officially Releasing Van Sant's Cannes-Bound Restless, Starring Wasikowska

We already announced this, but it’s official now: Sony Pictures Classics will release Gus Van Sant’s Restless in North America this fall. Columbia pulled the teen drama from the Sundance Premiere line-up at the last minute (it was literally the first film invited to the fest in August) in favor of sending it to Cannes. Given that Van Sant is a Croisette perennial, there’s no way that Restless won’t turn up there. Written by Jason Lew, the movie stars Jane Eyre‘s Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper (Kiss and Tell). The trailer is below.

Although it was finished long ago, the director has been tinkering with the picture, which “looks and plays totally like an independent,” according to one source. Given that SPC co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard know how to release this kind of festival film, moving it over from the big studio made sense.

Sony Pictures Releasing International is distributing the film in the rest of the world. Restless is produced by Bryce Dallas Howard, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard of Imagine Entertainment. Van Sant has reunited much of the Milk crew, including director of photographer Harris Savides (American Gangster, Zodiac), editor Elliot Graham (X Men, Superman Returns), costume designer Danny Glicker (Up in the Air, Thank You for Smoking) and composer Danny Elfman (Alice in Wonderland, Spiderman), as well as production designer Anne Ross (Lost in Translation, Somewhere The Squid and the Whale).

Sony Pictures Classics’ Oscar-winning In a Better World opens this weekend.
