Women to Watch: Anna Margarita Albelo

Anna Margarita Albelo

On this blog we have set mandates for ourselves to cover ‘women in the biz’ and also Latin American / Ibero filmmaking.

Anna Margarita’s next project was one of the six selected to participate in Miami Iinternational Film Festival’s Encuentros Program for Ibero-American films in progress. The feature, working title Sweet 15, is about a Miami-bred Cuban-American girl’s quest to have the best coming-of-age “quinceanera” party ever; shooting is scheduled for Fall 2011 in Miami.

Anna is a dynamic woman who is a filmmaker, journalist and proud Cuban American who hails from Miami and of course, was attending the Miami International Film Festival.

She attended TV / Film courses at Florida State University. From there she decided to move to Paris to live, make and direct films, be an artist.

Three years ago she moved to L.A. to live and work in the Echo Park Silverlake area.

She has a comedy, fiction background and brings that to her film work.

Two years ago her film ‘The Turkey’ (Le Dinde in French) was made with support from large French media company Canal+ and was in the prestigious Cannes section Semaine de la Critique / Critic’s Week (2008). The film is an ode to the end of the housewife and concerns a Mom who emancipates herself from her ungrateful family.

Anna has this as her personal creative motto – ‘Education Through Comedy’.

She likes to tell stories. Her current film ‘Hooters‘ a feature documentary (NOT about the bar chain!) will have its festival World Premiere at the biggest and best of U.S. Lesbian and Gay Film Festivals LA OUTFEST in July 2011. In its cast are some of our favorite friends Cheryl Dunye and the ubiquitous P. David Ebersole.

The film is about how to make a film about murder without killing each other in the process. Anna says, ‘… it goes into the heart of darkness … about Lesbians … everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask. Hooters explores Lesbian culture via the collaborative filmmaking process used in the seminal Lesbian film ‘The Owls‘.’ ‘Hooters’, after an L.A. screening, was named ‘Top Pick’ by the LA Weekly and described as ‘Riveting’.

As a first generation Latina in the U.S. Anna wants to share fun, real stories to develop a smart cultural identity.
