A Curation of Nicolas Cage Debacles, Difficulties & Dinosaur Skulls

The trouble with a movie star who runs afoul of the law in the age of chasing celebrity hot topics to build traffic, is that when you mess up, the media piles on you, big time. Nic Cage’s run-in with the New Orleans cops this weekend is a case in point. We round up some of the more responsible coverage:

ABC News on what actually happened this weekend: “According to police, Cage was heavily intoxicated and violent, arguing with his wife, Alice Kim, in a tattoo parlor and on the street, and pushing her. Later, he punched a few cars…” (news video below).

– GQ’s Jim Nelson recalls a trip to New Orleans (for Mardi Gras) when he was assaulted by Cage (who “was probably down there to buy human skulls”):

“…we were seated within wine-spitting distance of the bar and could still see Cage literally bouncing off the walls, spilling vino down his sleeve, as if he were performing Leaving Las Vegas: The Musical for some perverse dinner theater.” Nelson’s long story concludes, “That’s my story, which I lived to tell. I’m hoping Cage will do a dramatic reading of it for next month’s iPad app.”

– The Hollywood Reporter lists amongst his other troubles:

Criticism for His Bizarre Spending Habits: Cage owns a Caribbean island, a dinosaur skull (which he won in a bidding war against Leonardo DiCaprio), 30 to 50 cars, a zoo full of exotic pets, shrunken heads,  jewelry, and his 15 homes. aIn 1997, Cage broke the auction record for Lamborghinis when he placed a $490,000 bid on a rare Miura SVJ. “There’s a cluelessness,” someone who once worked with him tells The Daily Beast. “He’s been wealthy since he was 17 years old, and so he’s very removed from normal decision-making.”

– MTV considers the man who,”When he isn’t chasing down his purloined Superman comic books,” has “kept busy cranking out a steady combination of box-office fluff and embarrassing mug shots…”

– EOnline’s five other low points of Nicolas Cage include:

4. He Was Falsely Accused of Stealing a Chihuahua: In 2008, Cage, who had not yet been arrested for anything, was understandably peeved when a memoir penned by Peggy Sue Got Married costar Kathleen Turner (and serialized in a U.K. newspaper) asserted he’d been busted for DUI and, yes, dog-napping. Cage sued Turner in Britain, which has stricter libel laws, and won an apology, plus a donation to the charity of his choice.

– The Toronto Sun thought of “10 reasons why we’re not exactly shocked by the star’s crazy behavior,” including:

3. Once said he aspired to be “Bob Denver (Gilligan) on acid playing the accordion.”

– Here is Tonic’s list of Cage’s five weirdest performance, in which they call him “the man who might be America’s most daring actor.”

– And IGN’s 2009 chronicling of Cage’s Top 10 Misfires.

– Cage’s Best Quotes and Scenes of All Time (video).

Oh how the mighty (?) have fallen. Don’t blame us for what Google finds.
