Cannes Shorts Film Corner

A student of my online course at UCLA Extension Film School on Independent International Film Marketing and Distribution Across All Platforms responded to a question I asked about how to create a buzz for your film. I want to share the answer of this young man from France which illuminates this important point!

It was time to make a buzz. What would be better than a Festival for that? So we did some research and found out that the Cannes Film Festival had an amazing Film Market for shorts called Short Film Corner, and we also discovered the American Pavilion. They select young directors who want to sell their movies. The first step was to be selected.

Among more than 1450 films, my friend’s movie was selected to be shown during the Cannes Film Festival at the Short Film Corner with the American Pavilion. This year, the president was Martin Scorsese.

We also paid to have a small place at the Film Market where we could talk about the movie and advertise.

At the end of January, we had our own space at Film Market and were selected for the American Pavilion. We were sure to have a minimum of views…

But the most difficult part was not done yet!

This question is very important to me, because one year ago I worked on a special project with my school.

For my final exams I had to introduce to a jury, 5 projects that I worked on for 2 years… One of the projects was to create a buzz on a movie. It was called Edem and was directed by one of my friend who is studying Directing at NYU. So, I would like to focus my answer to this question on this particular project, and explain you all the things we have done to create a buzz (or trying to create a buzz).

It started in 2008 when my friend started to talk to me about the movie he was making. It’s a short film which deals with social adoptions in France. It was an important subject for him, because he was adopted…

This movie was independent and didn’t have any production company, he was raising the funds by himself and a couple of friends at NYU.

The first thing, to give some credibility to the project was to create a production company, my friend would be the manager of this virtual “company”. I named it and created a logotype. The company is called Goldendreams.
At the end of December, the company was “created” and the movie was done.

We were at the Festival, that was a good thing, but it was not enough! We created press files for the festival, movie posters, we were on all the social websites (Twitter, Facebook, Myspace…) etc. We wanted to see the movie Edem everywhere. People didn’t know Edem or Goldendreams, but we wanted them to come to us, to ask us questions and to discuss with us.

At the end of the festival, 367 persons had viewed the film, 2 DVD productions companies wanted to buy the film for a short films DVD. My friend picked up one (of course the best offer).

During ten days, our work was to talk about the movie and to create a buzz around it! Social Networks, ads, meetings… Everything was good to talk about it!

I am 20 years old and I come from Paris. I lived in Paris for 20 years, I’ve never lived somewhere else. But I really like L.A. so far… it’s so easy to meet people. Unfortunately we cannot meet you, that’s the bad part of online classes, I don’t really know how to deal with that, I like meeting people in face to face and not behind a screen…

I was graduated and then I enrolled a private school in Paris called ISCOM, the Superior Institution of Communications of Paris. I studied advertising and marketing. I graduated in June 2010, and here I am taking a Certificate in the Business and Mgmt of Entertainment.

I would like to work… Well no let’s be positive! I am going to work in the marketing of movies! The marketing department is the best! When I was taking my classes in Paris, we had to do some projects, and I always oriented mine around a book I read many times : Le marketing du cinema, written by Jean-François Camilleri (CEO of Disney Pictures in France). I had the chance to meet him during a Premiere in Paris, this guy is Amazing!!!

Talking about Disney Pictures, next week, I have a meeting with someone from the Marketing dpt. He may take me as an intern from June. That would be great!!

Even if my life is really short, I still can say I have some experiences in the Business… I carried out works placement for Paramount and Universal Pictures France in Paris. At the Advertising dpt and the Press dpt. There were great opportunities, I met so many people and made lots of connections. I also worked for a French Magazine called Côté Cinéma, which talk about movies obviously.

I am on a fire fighter truck, going to the cinema is my first hobby, but I also like training with the fire fighters on Saturday mornings. I am doing the volunteer fire fighters training, I really like it, so interesting…

I think I told you everything about me (at least everything you need to know).

Wow for someone who don’t like talking about himself, I think I did pretty good. :)
