‘Crazy Heart’ Director Scott Cooper To Re-Write & Direct Black List Script ‘The Low Dweller’

'Crazy Heart' Director Scott Cooper To Re-Write & Direct Black List Script 'The Low Dweller'

Update: A press release from Relativity confirms the report and reveals the new title to be “Out Of The Furnace.”

While Scott Cooper has been taking his time in mounting his follow-up to the sleeper awards season hit “Crazy Heart,” he certainly hasn’t been without options. Over the past year or so he’s been linked to: the western family feud saga “The Hatfields And The McCoys” with Brad Pitt attached; an adaptation of William Styron‘s “Lie Down In Darkness” with Jennifer Lawrence attached; an adaptation of Bob Dylan‘s “Brownsville Girl” also with Brad Pitt attached; he was a contender for “Tales From The Gangster Squad” and most recently, was lined up to direct a remake of the Argentinian thriller “Carancho.” But, he’s adding yet another project to his already crowded slate.

Deadline reports that Cooper will re-write and direct “The Low Dweller,” written by up-and-comer Brad Ingelsby, that ended up in the #5 spot on the 2008 Black List. The grim tale, which is drawing comparisons to “No Country For Old Men,” is set in Indiana in 1986 and follows Slim, recently released from prison, who intends to marry his girlfriend but instead is drawn into a quest for revenge when his brother is murdered after getting involved in the gambling racket.

Back in the day, Rupert Wyatt (“Snow White And The Huntsman“) was attached to direct with Leonardo DiCaprio to star. No lead actor is set yet, but DiCaprio is staying on board to produce via his Appian Way shingle, with the project set up for over at Relativity.

No word yet on where this falls into Cooper’s plans but considering he needs to do some work on the script, we don’t expect it mount anytime soon. But we will say this, Cooper continues to get some great projects hooked up with his name — now let’s just hope one of them begins to move forward.
