In The Works: Nolan Helps Snyder with Superman; Working Title's Trash; Flight of Conchords's Hobbit

– Zack Snyder is under pressure. Empire talks with the Sucker Punch and Superman: Man Of Steel director, who is confronting skepticism following Punch‘s critical beating. Producer Christopher Nolan, thankfully, is offering plenty of help for the Superman reboot. No surprise, with people asking questions like, “Does Sucker Punch Spell Doom For Superman: Man of Steel?” Says Snyder, “Chris has been amazingly generous with me [with the Superman storyline]…He’s making [The Dark Knight Rises] but he takes time if we’re knocking around ideas for the script.” And why wouldn’t he? “Honestly,” adds Snyder, “he wants us to make the best movie we can and he’s just interested in helping with that without messing up the process. I think it’s amazingly generous of him.”

– Screenwriter Richard Curtis (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Love, Actually) and director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader) are teaming for Working Title/Peapie Films’s adaptation of Andy Mulligan’s contemporary young adult thriller Trash. Fittingly, the story is about three boys who pick through trash to get by. When they stumble upon a leather bag, the contents set off an adventure in which they use their wits to fight against authority and corruption. Peapie Film’s Kris Thykier tells Variety: “I am truly excited at the prospect of bringing Andy Mulligan’s joyful story to the screen and am honored to be working with Working Title, whom I consider to be the best production company in the world and Richard, one of my favorite screenwriters, and Stephen, who is justly considered one of the greatest directors of his generation.” The plan is to shoot the film in 2012. Daldry is currently directing Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close with Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. Curtis’s War Horse is also in production with Steven Spielberg directing. Here is our profile on Working Title’s exciting slate.

The Hobbit‘s latest addition is Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie. The New Zealander is playing an elf, of course – but an elf with great sugar lumps (see below) – in Peter Jackson’s film, which is shooting in McKenzie’s homeland. Below, we share some of his and his co-star Jemaine Clement’s best Conchords moments.
