Poster of the Week

Poster of the Week

Um….Okay, this is terrifying. I am instantly befuddled and bemused by everything in this poster. The title of the film would lead one to expect a slasher film of some kind, perhaps one with a sense of humor (Rupert Pupkin reconstituted as a serial killer, maybe), but the PG rating; the incandescent smiles of Robby Benson and (let me get my reading glasses) Linda Grovenor (?), with whom Benson apparently shares an arm; and the cheerful guitar-strumming second Robby Benson in the bottom right of the image would seem to indicate otherwise. Then we have the matter of the monkey—the little devil is right out of Romero’s Monkey Shines, but blessed with a set of bright, shiny false choppers and haloed by a bright sunny orb. If it’s a romantic comedy rather than a horror film, does the monkey complete some sort of bestial love triangle? This disturbingly titled teenybopper oddity contains original songs by Benson surely not available on iTunes; supporting roles by once tireless character actors Charles Durning, the Bride of Frankenstein, and Bud Cort; and a title font ripped right from Christine’s dashboard. Finally the impenetrable tagline: “As a singer, he’s a killer. As a lover, he’s a killer. As a killer, he’s a lovely singer.” Ok, I’m off to imdb…I can’t take it anymore. Don’t fail me, anonymous plot synopsis:

“A San Francisco cab driver find himself in possession of a monkey that is carrying a formula for turning atomic waste into a plutonium bomb. He finds himself framed for a murder and chased all over town by people trying to get the formula.”

More eloquently, user mer_mer06:

“I don’t want to write a spoiler, so I’ll just say that one of my favorite parts is when Pinsky discovers… a man who’s not feeling too well in his cab, & his reaction. Oh my god! I love the “Doing, doing, doing”! The music is great, the cast is great, it’s one of my All-Time Favorites.”
