Strand Releasing has acquired all US rights to Athina Rachel Tsangari’s “Attenberg” from The Match Factory today. The film was acquired at its screening at this year’s 40th New Directors/New Films.

The Greek new wave infused film finds a young girl discovering her sexuality while dealing with her ailing father.

The deal was done between Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing and Michael Weber of The Match Factory.

Tsangari presented the critically acclaimed film to two packed screenings at the festival.

“It is both thrilling and reassuring to see the most adventurous and innovative films find a way to screens across the country. Yet another sign that there are still professionals and companies passionate about great cinema, and willing to put their resources behind it,” said Rajendra Roy Rajendra Roy, Chief Curator of Film at the Museum of Modern Art.

“Tsangari is one of the unique cinematic voices I’ve seen in awhile. We’re thrilled to include her with our other filmmakers such as Lucrecia Martel, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Francois Ozon as an auteur with a distinct vision and voice,” said Marcus Hu of Strand Releasing.

“Attendberg” premiered at the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and subsequently had its US premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this year.

The film is set for a late 2011 release

Strand Releasing’s slate includes upcoming Catherine Breillat’s “The Sleeping Beauty” Joao Pedro Rodrigues, “To Die Like a Man,” Clio Barnard’s “The Arbor,” Michael Rowe’s “Leap Year” and Craig McCall’s “Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff.”
