Will 'Hangover Part II' be the next 'Weekend at Bernie's II?'

When the news first hit that The Hangover would receive a sequel, I was among the many people who scoffed at the idea. How do you continue a story that was about as self-contained as high concept premises get? Sequels for surprise blockbuster comedies, built around high concept hooks, are often a disaster. Just look at Home Alone 2, City Slickers II, Look Who’s Talking Too, Weekend at Bernie’s II, Teen Wolf Too, 3 Men and a Little Lady, Sister Act 2, Miss Congeniality 2, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and Arthur 2: On the Rocks. The original films captured a joyful spirit, with lightning in a bottle. The follow-up films tried to stretch the already thin loglines of the originals into something more, and failed. Here comes The Hangover Part II, a film that has every chance of becoming a great comedy sequel, or could have just gone unmade to save everyone time. The first full trailer is out, and it looks troubling. Like many of the aforementioned sequels, the makers of this one took the basic outline of the original, and added a few new ingredients. Vegas is now Bangkok. A missing bachelor is now a missing brother-in-law. A baby is now a monkey. A missing tooth is now a face tattoo. You get the idea. I would love to be proven wrong, but here’s why I’m worried:
