Cannes Flashback 2006: Marie Antoinette, Babel, Al Green

In preparation of the annual Cannes Film Festival, here are some more highlights from my first year at the event, in 2006. Some photos I snapped at the time:

(At the ‘Marie Antoinette’ premiere party, the film’s star Kirsten Dunst mingles with actor/comedian Robin Williams. The party was probably one of the best we’d seen all week, with a guest list that included the cast/crew as well as Francis Ford Coppola, Lance Armstrong, Kelly Brook, Tim Roth, and more. The night ended with a fireworks show over the water, set to the film’s post-punk soundtrack.)

(‘Babel’ director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who won the directing prize that year, hangs out at the party for Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pan’s Labyrinth.’)

(Snakes on a yacht! Samuel L. Jackson, who was on the jury, at a yacht party for Film Independent. He’s flanked by former FIND executive director Dawn Hudson, left, and former Los Angeles Film Festival programmer Rachel Rosen, far right.)

(A legendary yacht party hosted by some of Austin’s biggest film supporters, with Al Green playing a full set aboard the roof. An unofficial after-party for Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly, actor Robert Downey Jr. was dancing up a storm in his pre-comeback days.)

(Across the street from the Palais, as things get quiet on the final night at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.)
