Cannes Rounds Out Lineup With 'The Artist' & Sundance Institute Winner 'Elena'

While it was expected that the Cannes Film Festival would be adding a couple more films as the start date for the fest draws near, none of the high profile films that were tipped but missed the fest have made it across the finish line, but we do have some intriguing selections nonetheless.

In the competition category, Michel Hazanavicius will unveil “The Artist” starring John Goodman, Missi Pyle, James Cromwell and Penelope Ann Miller. The French production, English language film seems to be a bit of a departure for the director who is perhaps best known for his farce “OSS 117” films coming in a period movie in black and white. Here’s the synopsis roughly translated from the production company website: “Hollywood, 1927. George Valentin is a silent movie star: he is handsome, athletic and an excellent dancer. The arrival of talking pictures is going to sink in alcohol, poverty and oblivion for the young actress Peppy Miller sees as a global star driven.”

Meanwhile over in the Un Certain Regard program, Andrei Zvyagintsev will premiere “Elena.” Details on this one are a bit more scarce, but in 2010 the project won funding and support from the Sundance Institute and NHK. Here’s what’s in store from the filmmaker: “An elderly woman who has lived with her rich husband in a large, comfortable home tries to rescue her alcoholic son from poverty and give his family the opportunity for a better life that she alone could not provide.”

While you may not know the director’s name, he’s been hot on the arthouse circuit with his previous films. “The Return” was nominated for a Golden Globe and won the Golden Lion for the best director’s debut at the Venice Film Festival and “Banishment” premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and earned Konstantin Lavronenko an award for Best Leading Actor Award.

The Cannes Film Festival kicks off on May 11th.
