Congolese Gangster Flick "Viva Riva!" Will Open In UK Next Month + New Poster & Trailer

Continuing to make something of an international splash, as the most audacious film to come out of the country, Djo Tunda Wa Munga’s Congo-Kinshasa-set crime thriller, Viva Riva – a film I saw and reviewed earlier this year (calling it a pulsating look at a post-war city), will also be released in the UK; so, our readers in the region will get to see it as well, and judge the hype for themselves.

It opens in limited UK theaters on June 24th, and, in anticipation of that opening, its UK distributors have provided a new poster (above), and trailer (below).

As we’ve already told you, Viva Riva opens on June 10th, in New York and Los Angeles, courtesy of North American distributor, Music Box.

The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, and we’ve been tracking it since then.

Its synopsis, again, reads as follows: Riva is a small time operator who has just returned to his hometown of Kinshasa, Congo after a decade away with a major score: a fortune in hijacked gasoline. Wads of cash in hand and out for a good time, Riva is soon entranced by beautiful night club denizen Nora, the kept woman of a local gangster. Into the mix comes an Angolan crime lord relentlessly seeking the return of his stolen shipment of gasoline.

Watch the UK trailer below which isn’t terribly different from the others you’ve already seen.
