Janet Jackson has been signed up as the entertainment, which should make the event hotter than ever. Now the big question is whether or not Sharon Stone will be back after a year off from conducting the famed live auction. There are those who love Sharon’s style and some who don’t. But AmFAR suffers a little without Stone’s presence.(Last year, the AmFAR people were very upset when I reported that Sharon wasn’t coming. She had a film to shoot in Eastern Europe.)
Unusually enough, while Weinstein is riding high and should be able to lure some top talent, he doesn’t have anything– in or out of the festival– to screen with the event (like Cliffhanger above). I was fantasizing it might be Michelle Williams starrer My Week with Marilyn. He’ll be trawling for pick-ups and networking with future partners (I always love his annual distributors brunch).
Kenneth Cole will co-host with Weinstein at the Hotel du Cap event; L’Oreal is sponsoring the after party. This year AmFAR competes with Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, starring Antonio Banderas. But there should be some names available to add some gloss to the evening, including Friends with Benefits star Jon Hamm and Drive‘s Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. It’s unlikely that Tree of Life‘s Sean Penn and Brad Pitt (with Angelina Jolie) would show for this media-heavy event, although they may want to show support for late great activist Elizabeth Taylor, who created it and will be lauded this year.
