Los Angeles, CA (May 13, 2011) – Berry Meyerowitz, President & CEO of Phase 4 Films, announced today that the company has acquired all U.S. rights from Mandalay Vision for ANOTHER HAPPY DAY, writer/director Sam Levinson’s dark comedy about a dysfunctional family. The film stars Ellen Barkin, Demi Moore, Kate Bosworth, Thomas Haden Church, Ellen Burstyn, and Ezra Miller. Barkin was a producer on the film, along with Celine Rattray, Todd Traina, Johnny Lin, Michael Nardelli, Salli Newman, and Pamela Fielder. ANOTHER HAPPY DAY premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, where Sam Levinson was awarded the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Phase 4 will release the film this coming Fall, and has also brought veteran industry executive David Dinerstein onboard to spearhead the theatrical release.
In the film, high strung Lynn (Ellen Barkin) and her troubled grown children, (Ezra Miller, Kate Bosworth) journey deep into the heart of domestic darkness to attend the wedding of her estranged eldest son. As a feud rages on with the family she left behind, Lynn struggles in vain to protect herself and save her children from the violent and oftentimes hilarious chaos that surrounds them.
“ANOTHER HAPPY DAY had Sundance audiences both laughing and crying in equal proportions,” said Meyerowitz. “The film marks Sam Levinson’s bold arrival as a filmmaker and Ellen Barkin delivers a remarkable performance. People will connect with this insightful look into the messy dynamics of the modern family.”
Cathy Schulman, President of Mandalay Pictures, said, “From the first time the Phase 4 team saw ANOTHER HAPPY DAY, they were committed to marketing and distributing it. This type of passion is so important to the film and distribution process; and we’re glad Sam Levinson’s very special first film will be handled with care and enthusiasm.”
The deal was negotiated by Larry Greenberg, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions for Phase 4 Films and Michelle Hastings at Mandalay Vision with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.
