Phase 4 To Take Kevin Smith's "Red State" On a Canadian "Red Province Tour"

Phase 4 Films has acquired all Canadian rights to Kevin Smith’s “Red State,” it was announced today. The film is being released in the U.S. independently by Smith himself this October, but in Canada Phase 4 will release the film in the coming months with a creative marketing and distribution campaign that will include a tour across the country.

Said Smith in the press release: “I love Canada — it’s a special country with some of the greatest people you’ll ever meet so I am incredibly pleased to have found a like-minded distributor in Phase 4 who is keen on bringing the film to audiences across the Great White North in what we are calling our ‘Red Province Tour’.”

Los Angeles, CA (May 17, 2011) – Berry Meyerowitz, President & CEO of Phase 4 Films, announced today that the company has acquired all Canadian rights to Kevin Smith’s RED STATE. The film was written and directed by Smith and produced by Jon Gordon, and stars Michael Parks, John Goodman, Melissa Leo and Kyle Gallner. RED STATE made its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Phase 4 plans to release the film in the coming months with a creative marketing and distribution campaign that will include a tour across Canada.

In the film, a group of Middle American teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.

“RED STATE is an intelligent and meticulously crafted film that cuts across multiple genres,” said Meyerowitz. “Part horror, part thriller, and part comedy, this film proves that Kevin Smith can artfully tackle more than his trademark comedic style. He brings incredibly strong performances out of the entire cast, particularly from Michael Parks, Melissa Leo and John Goodman.”

“Phase 4 totally gets what we set out to do with RED STATE and they plan on releasing the film in a similar style to what we have done in the U.S.,” said Smith. “I love Canada — it’s a special country with some of the greatest people you’ll ever meet so I am incredibly pleased to have found a like-minded distributor in Phase 4 who is keen on bringing the film to audiences across the Great White North in what we are calling our ‘Red Province Tour’.”

Following the film’s Sundance premiere, RED STATE launched a tour in the U.S. starting in New York City, and has earned over $850,000 in box office revenue on fifteen single night engagements. The tour features a screening of the film followed by a live Q&A with Smith where he discusses the film and his career.

The deal was negotiated by Larry Greenberg, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions for Phase 4 Films and John Sloss at Cinetic Media, Jerry Dasti at Sloss Eckhouse LawCo LLP, and David Dinerstein of D2 Films on behalf of the filmmakers.

The film, which stars Ellen Barkin, Demi Moore, Kate Bosworth, Thomas Haden Church, Ellen Burstyn, and Ezra Miller, made its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Phase 4 will release the film this Fall.
