President Obama was the star, but Seth Meyers did a terrific comic monologue too when he followed the President at last night’s White House Correspondents Dinner.
At first Meyers seemed a little stiff, reading his jokes, which were too heavily about journalism to play as well as they should for the TV audience. But when he moved into political jokes all those years as host of SNL‘s Weekend Update paid off and he had a perfect run to the end.
His main target was that egomanical fake presidential candidate. He said it seemed odd that Trump is runnning as a Republican, when, as Meyers put it, “I thought he was runnng as a joke.”
And he took some gentle shots at the President, saying there’s one candidate he would have loved: 2008 Obama.
The President’s speech appeared online early; if you missed it, here it is, the best comic routine I’ve seen in a while.
Video of Meyers has finally turned up too, and its worth watching (or zooming past the journalism jokes).
