A jury headed by Lee Chang-Dong has decided that Jeff Nichols’ “Take Shelter” is best-in-show at the Cannes Film Festival’s 50th Critics’ Week.
The film – which stars Michael Shannon and Cannes’ it girl Jessica Chastain – took the Grand Prize at the program. It also took the SACD prize for best screenwriting. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and is being released this fall Stateside via Sony Pictures Classics. It stars Shannon as an Ohio family man who slowly starts to succumb to mental illness via apocalyptic nightmares and intense paranoia. Check out indieWIRE‘s review of the film here.
Other winners in the program included Justin Kurzel’s “Snowtown,” which earned a Special Mention by the President, and Pablo Giorgelli’s “Las Acacias,” which took home two honors, winning both the OFAJ Young Critics Prize and the ACID (Association of Independent Cinema for its Distribution)/CCAS (Main Fund of Social Activities) award.
Stephen Kang’s short film “Blue” won the Canal Plus’ Grand Prix, Valery Rosier’s “Dimanches” won the Discovery Prize and Guillaume Gouix’s “Alexis Ivanovitch Vous Etes Mon Hero” earned a special mention.
Joining Lee Chang-Dong on the main jury were Scott Foundas, Nick James, Sergio Wolf and Cristina Piccino.
