Tina Fey Brings Back Palin, But Her SNL Is No Bossypants (Video)

There’s Tina Fey in the photo above, literally glowing with pregnancy because, as she explained in the promo to last night’s SNL, she’s carrying an alien baby. And while there were plenty of irreverent Mom jokes from Fey and pregnant guest Maya Rudolph on the show, the best parts had nothing to do with the Mother’s Day theme, or with some oddly flat Bin Laden jokes.

The best sketch: In a Fox News debate among unannounced Republican candidates, Fey brought back her perfectly on-target Sarah Palin, saying, “It’s just so great to be back on Fox News, a network that both pays me and shows me the questions ahead of time. And I just hope that tonight the lamestream media won’t twist my words by repeatin’ them verbatim.” Darrell Hammond, who always did the best Trump impressions, returned as the only candidate whose name was written on his lectern against a gauche golden background.

I wish I could say that Fey’s comic voice came through in more sketches, but it didn’t especially. For that, you have to watch 30 Rock, which just ended its season, or read her sharp, funny memoir Bossypants. As she said in her opening monologue, she has the number 1 book in the country, and the number 86 TV show.

The Digital Video was movie-centric, with Michael Bolton disappointing Andy Samberg and his group The Lonely Island when he turns up to record with them, only to sing as film characters from Jack Sparrow to Scarface.
