Binger Endangered Program

Binger Endangered Program

The reactionary right wing Dutch government intends to withdraw culture subsidies which would close down the worldwide popular Binger Filmlab.

On June 10 the State Secretary of Education, Culture, and Science sent a Policy paper on Culture to Parliament. In this document Mr Zijlstra articulated this government’s intention to cut back the state’s budget for Culture approximately 25%. Among many other initiatives all governmental subsidies for post-academic institutions such as Binger Filmlab will be withdrawn as of January 2013.

Given the government’s alleged commitment to the development of top talent, international acclaim and the development of creative industries – and Binger’s dedication to these goals – these cutbacks are incomprehensible.

Letter to the State Secretary by Bingers’ international advisors

A large number of international advisors have jointly sent a letter to the State Secretary in support of the unique character and impact of Binger Filmlab on the filmsector.

“As experts from the audiovisual field, we are attracted to work at Binger Filmlab from wherever we may live in the world, as we recognise the stimulating creative atmosphere and level of professionalism that allows a consistently high quality of work. Now that a Binger brand has been firmly established, the quality level and number of applications has risen sharply as word of the opportunities available there for innovative and collaboratively minded filmmakers has spread. A thorough and exhaustive selection process from amongst these applicants has ensured that the quality threshold continues to rise to a demandingly high professional level.

Now that Binger Filmlab has emerged as a major player on this world stage and an important functional development laboratory to the Dutch audiovisual sector, we (….) would therefore strongly urge continuous support for this unique and important organisation.” (Read more here)

Petition Binger Alumni

Binger Alumni worldwide– have drawn up a petition to protest against the government’s cut backs on Culture, in support of Binger Filmlab.

Binger Fllmlab supports talent with the guts to do what it takes to make a film great!

It provides an inspiring environment that stands out internationally as one of the best labs for filmmakers from around the world to experiment, challenge and create.

We understand that Dutch culture is under great pressure. Drastic cuts in funding – however – would not only have a disastrous impact on Binger Filmlab; it would also jeopardize the global impact and viability of the Dutch film sector. For precisely that reason we strongly plea for continuous support of Binger Filmlab, a unique, international research and project development lab for outstanding filmtalent.

Equity and esteem built over the years once lost, will be extremely hard to retrieve.
