Carey Mulligan Joining Director Gary Ross For Sci-Fi Actioner ‘Outback’

Carey Mulligan Joining Director Gary Ross For Sci-Fi Actioner 'Outback'

26 year old British actress Carey Mulligan may want to think about getting a second home down under. The “Never Let Me Go” and “An Education” actress is already set to start filming Baz Luhrmann‘s adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” in Australia later this summer and now she’s boarded another picture that will take her down to Oz.

The actress has joined a sci-fi action project called, “Outback” that will be directed by “Seabiscuit” helmer Gary Ross. Spearheaded by Graham King’s GK Films, who recently started the offshoot distribution shingle FilmDistrict, the picture is based off an idea from Ross and screenwriter Nissar Modi (“Z For Zachariah“) which he will also be penning.

Additional details are scarce, but the project, naturally, will be set in the Australian outback.

Before Ross can tackle this film though, he’ll have the “Hunger Games” adaptation to deal with, which is filming now. It also suggests that perhaps like “Twilight,” Ross won’t be sticking around for other films in the “Hunger Games” trilogy and the series might be bouncing around from filmmaker to filmmaker.

Mulligan was last on screen in Mark Romanek‘s aforementioned “Never Let Me Go,” and will be seen next in Nicolas Winding Refn‘s “Drive” alongside Ryan Gosling and then in Steve McQueen‘s “Shame” opposite Michael Fassbender.

While action doesn’t seem to be Ross’ bread and butter until “Hunger Games.” The move had been planned for some time. In 2008, he had plans to take over Steven Spielberg‘s “Matt Helm” with Bradley Cooper in the starring role, but the project never found wings. Now with “Hunger Games” on the move and “Outback” in the works, Ross will be finessing these type of chops over two pictures. Now what does Mulligan’s great skills do in a film like this? Hopefully more than just scream. [Variety]
