Europa Distribution Hosted by Thierry Fremaux's Festival Lumière

Headed by Thierry Frémaux, the Festival Lumière will host Europa Distribution’s 5th annual conference on October 6-9, 2011 in Lyon, with the support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union.

The new partnership with the Institut Lumière in Lyon is exciting because it puts independent distributors in a very high and prestigious place (where they should) be in Europe. Europa Distribution is also working hard to bring U.S. distributors into the common sphere. Founding partner, Adeline Monzier, now living in New York, is also working with the American Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland to get American independent films in post-production the financing they need to complete the film from the distributors who are members of Europa Distribution. U.S. non-profit support orgs like IFP and Film Independent have regrettably been very slow to respond to this dynamic organization’s request for support. This disappoints me personally because I am such an advocate of international cooperation among the indies in U.S. and abroad (which can bring producers 70% of a film’s revenues) and have pointedly asked both organizations to connect with this group.

Régine Vial, President of Europa Distribution, comments:

“It seems a natural choice to work with the Institut Lumière, a place of reminiscence and cinephilia. All distributors’ members of our network came to this business because of their passion for films, films from yesterday, today and tomorrow. Moreover, it is an honor for Europa Distribution to be hosted by Thierry Frémaux whose Cannes selection is at the heart of our members’ line-ups: 80% of the films selected in competition in Cannes are released by independent distributors”.

For Betrand Tavernier, President of the Institut Lumière:

“To welcome Europa Distribution is to acknowledge the work and energy of those who advocate and fight for the circulation of independent cinema in Europe. It is also, for a young festival like the Festival Lumière which seeks to promote the reconciliation of past and present, about welcoming professionals who believe that the valuation of repertoire films, the restoration of heritage movies and the training of audiences guarantee the future of cinema in its whole”.

This new partnership is a continuation of the development of Europa Distribution’s activities. Since its foundation in 2006, Europa Distribution has become one of the fastest growing trade organizations in the film industry, now representing 110 indie distributors in 26 countries. The body acts as a think tank, a lobbying organization and an essential professional network for members. At its own forward-thinking workshops, and at key events and festivals around Europe, it has become an important and constructive voice in the debate about the future of the independent film industry.

This year’s annual conference in Lyon will tackle the issues of digital change and new business models and thus give voice to indie distributors on current hot European debates.
