Harvey Weinstein Gets In Bed With Madonna As TWC Takes "W.E."

The Weinstein Company has announced that it has acquired U.S. rights to Madonna’s “W.E.”

The film – rumored to be heading to the Venice Film Festival at the end of the summer – spans six decades, juxtaposing a contemporary love story with that of King Edward VIII and American divorcée Wallis Simpson. It stars Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac, Richard Coyle, James D’Arcy and Andrea Riseborough.

“W.E. is about the nature of true love, and the sacrifices and compromises that are often made,” Madonna said in a statement. I’ve wanted to tell this story for a very long time, and bringing it to life has been a great adventure for me. I’m looking forward to working with Harvey and The Weinstein Company on this film.”

The film marks Madonna’s second directorial effort after 2008’s “Filth and Wisdom” (indieWIRE interviewed her with regard to that film). In addition to directing, she co-wrote the screenplay to “W.E.” with Alek Keshishian (who directed her doc “Truth or Dare”) and is reportedly composing the score of the film with producer William Orbit and Polish composer Abel Korzeniowski.

“Madonna has really come into her own as a filmmaker with W.E.,” said Harvey Weinstein in a statement. “She’s taken one of the most famous romances of the 20th Century and brought it to life in a smart, sexy and thoroughly modern way. It’s a terrific addition to our US release slate.”

The deal was negotiated for TWC by Harvey Weinstein, COO David Glasser and Michal Steinberg, Senior Vice President Business Affairs and Acquisitions; and by CAA, on behalf of the filmmakers. IM Global has international rights for the film.
