Ten-Year-Old Cult Classic Wet Hot American Summer May See Sequel

On the endless list of sequels in the works you can add cult DVD fave Wet Hot American Summer, director and co-writer David Wain told Jeff Goldsmith. A decade after the film’s release, Wain says: “the prequel would be the same summer… so it would be 40 year olds playing 16 year olds. And yeah, we’re in the early stages of thinking about that.”

Well, EW’s intrepid reporters canvassed the stars of the cult classic, and Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Meloni, Janeane Garofalo, and David Hyde Pierce are all game to rejoin the movie at bargain basement rates, as is co-writer Michael Showalter (Coop):

“I’m really excited for the idea of a sequel, or a prequel, or for the first-ever movie that is both a prequel and a sequel. Although David pointed out that that’s Godfather II.”

That leaves Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper and Michael Ian Black still to be heard from. That may help push the project up hill, but remember, the “early stages of thinking” has been the film’s status for the past five years.
