Trailer Watch: Craig Brewer's Footloose Remake Needs More Kevin Bacon

Check out the new trailer below for the updated version of the 80s musical hit Footloose, a movie that looks to be the most implausible of high school dance films. That’s because despite a complete ban on dancing in the small rural town, everyone there seems to boast professional dance training.

The 1984 flick updated for this millennium is built on a tragic premise—several teens die in a car crash after a raucous party, leading the town to ban dancing and loud music. In the trailer, the adult figures don’t seem like zealots, they just seem sad.

Apparently lacking a clear youth vs. authority battle, Kevin Bacon’s unbridled enthusiasm, or a compelling soundtrack, the trailer does indicate that Craig Brewer’s movie is trying to reclaim the energy of the first film. As Russ Rischer wrote on /Film: “If there wasn’t already a perfectly entertaining movie called Footloose, this might look very vaguely OK.”

The film’s dancer-turned actor Kenny Wormald does seem to have the unchecked confidence of his lead character, gushing in an interview with MTV after he watched the trailer: “I thought I was going to scream! I was blown away!”
