Take one of John Le Carre’s best Cold War international espionage thrillers–1974’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy–adapt it with strong writers (the late Bridget O’Connor and her husband and writing partner Peter Straughan) and cast a strong Brit ensemble (Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch) led by Gary Oldman as George Smiley, the one spy you can trust. Add Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson and you may have a winner. See the new trailer below.

Working Title produced, backed by Studio Canal Plus without Universal financing, but when the film screened for buyers in Berlin, the studio exercised its first look rights and grabbed it, passing it wisely to Focus Features. The movie opens November 18, against The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn and Happy Feet 2 in 3-D, but good placement for an Oscar run. Warners just announced new dates for Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar Hoover biopic J. Edgar (October), starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tom Hanks/Sandra Bullock starrer Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (December), produced by Scott Rudin and directed by Stephen Daldry from Eric Roth’s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel.

The film is expected to play the fall festival circuit and had been rumored to open Venice, but that slot went to George Clooney’s Ides of March.
