Universal Reteams With ‘Bridesmaids’ Director Paul Feig & Producer Judd Apatow For New Comedy

Universal Reteams With 'Bridesmaids' Director Paul Feig & Producer Judd Apatow For New Comedy

Well, that didn’t take too long. With “Bridesmaids” proving to be a critical smash and a huge box office surprise, crossing $100 million this past weekend in domestic ticket sales, Universal has re-upped their relationship with the film’s director Paul Feig and producer Judd Apatow.

Deadline reports that the studio has picked up a comic pitch that will find the duo returning to their roles behind the camera. Details are under wraps for now, but it’s described as “an unconventional love story” that Feig “has been working on for awhile” with the suggestion being it could roll in front of cameras sooner rather than later. When we spoke to Feig last month, he definitely listed this project as one of two he might do after “Bridesmaids” — and while he didn’t share any more secrets with us — it looks like this film has taken the pole position. And he might bring some of the “Bridesmaids” stars with him.

“There’s an original [project] that I’m going to do for a couple of the members in our [‘Bridemaids’] cast,” Feig had told us. “The [new project] I’m working on would be for [Judd and I] to work together on again. I just love working with him, I think we work really well together, our voices mesh in a nice way.” Of course, no one is officially attached yet and we’ll have to wait to see just who comes aboard.

Feig has also said that he’s developing a romantic comedy for “Bridesmaids” breakout star Melissa McCarthy, so it’s very possible that these two projects are one and the same. Of course McCarthy and “Bridesmaids” writer Annie Mumolo have sold their own separate comedy pitch to Paramount, so no matter how you look at it, the “Bridesmaids” team are reaping the rewards of this film (though why star Kristen Wiig hasn’t announced any major new deals and or found funding for what’s supposed to be her next project, “Imogene” which is supposed to (hopefully) shoot this summer, is a bit of a mystery to us).

We’re definitely glad to see Feig get a megahit under his belt, allowing the same doors to be opened for more original work from the underrated writer/director. And if you haven’t seen “Bridesmaids,” what are you waiting for? It’s in theaters now.
