Watch J.J. Abrams' Own Childhood Super 8 Film on Jimmy Kimmel

We know that Super 8 is based on J.J. Abrams’ childhood love of movies, but last night he brought Jimmy Kimmel the visual proof: a horror film he made as a boy. Brief though it is, The Attic is complete with special effects, a large knife, bad dialogue.

This clip from the interview is packed with information. Abrams says he called Rob Reiner for advice about directing the kid actors in Super 8 (the film’s Stand By Me aura is very conspicuous) and does a not-bad Reiner impression. There’s a glimpse of Abrams as a boy on a public access TV show demonstrating horror makeup (that’s 2:20 in). And of course The Attic, the proto-Super 8. (3: 20 in)
